Alert: Upcoming Changes to the EU Textile Labeling Regulation
The European Commission is in the process of revising the EU textile labeling regulation, with the updated version expected to be released by the first quarter of 2025. This new regulation will introduce additional requirements for both physical and digital labeling information for textiles and footwear. Trimco Group encourages and supports brands in taking the first steps, keeping an eye open on the upcoming changes.
Why a New EU Textile Labeling Regulation?
In March 2022, the European Commission introduced an EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles as part of the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP). Textiles were identified as a critical product value chain requiring immediate EU action due to their significant resource use and environmental impact.
By 2030, the EU aims for textiles to be:
- Durable
- Recyclable
- Made mostly from recycled fibers
- Free of harmful substances
- Produced sustainably while respecting social rights
This strategy envisions phasing out fast fashion, promoting re-use and repair services, maximizing recycling through innovative methods, and reducing incineration and landfilling.
Key Features of the New Regulation
The revision of the EU Textile Labeling regulation aims to ensure accurate, intelligible, and comparable information for consumers, including environmental aspects. It also seeks to reduce compliance costs and ensure regulatory clarity and consistency. One of the things that will featured, will be a digital component – and this is what at Trimco Group, have been supporting several brands already.
While there is more to be aligned on, what we know is that some of the innovative features expected in the new regulation include:
- Digital labeling building on the Digital Product Passport (DPP)
- Language-independent symbols or codes
- Sustainability and circularity labels
- Origin ('made in') labels
- EU-wide uniform sizing
- Presence of allergenic substances
- Leather and fur authenticity
- Flammability information
- Organic/bio-origin labels
- Socially responsible production of textiles and related products
