France's Garment Impact Score: An Operational Guide
France’s Garment Impact Score decree 2025-957 and order, taking effect October 1, 2025, set the rules for calculating and displaying an environmental impact score for each textile clothing product sold by brands on the French market. This system is designed to drive sustainable fashion compliance and transparency.
The rule becomes mandatory for any brand currently communicating an environmental impact score or claim. Any stakeholder can publish scores on a product, so proactive compliance helps brands maintain control of their sustainability narrative.
Key data for the garment impact score
Each Garment Impact Score must correspond to a single item reference - meaning an item with the same shape, composition, color, and texture.
The display of the score is regulated: it must be shown as prominently as the price and made available to the consumer at the time of purchase, both in-store and online.
The official decree also requires artwork to be provided and mandates that brands declare each reference’s score on a public platform of the French ministry of economy and environment.
What is the environmental impact score calculation about?
Accurate impact scoring requires brands to collect and organize a comprehensive set of data points, as defined by the French regulations.
Some of these data points must be specific to the brand and product (such as precise composition, finished product weight, and origin of key production stages), while others can be generic or product type-based if brand-specific values are not available.
The calculation methodology and product segments concerned today are limited to main product ranges however the Ecobalyse methodology will constantly evolve – France is constantly working on collected market data to refine methodology and extend it to other product types. Product types concerned today are:
/ Boxer / Slip
/ Boxer short
/ Socks
/ Shirt
/ Jean
/ Skirt / Dress
/ Swimming suit
/ Coat / Jacket
/ Trouser
/ Sweater
/ T-shirt / Polo shirt
17 data points are required to run the calculation, among those, 6 data points are brand specific. Other can be calculated based on the product-type if brand is missing the information:
/ Product type
/ Finished product weight
/ Whether the product is remanufactured
/ Number of references in the market segment
/ Reference price
/ Company size and repair services offered
/ Whether geographical traceability of production stages is clearly displayed
/ Composition: Materials representing at least 2% of total product weight and 5% of total impact
/Geographical origin of raw materials
/ Geographical origin of spinning stage
/ Geographical origin of weaving/knitting stage
/ Geographical origin of finishing or printing stage
/ Printing applied to the garment, if applicable
/ Geographical origin of manufacturing (assembly) stage
/ Fabric washing process, if applicable
/ Proportion of air transport used in logistics
/ Accessories included in the sales unit: such as buttons, zips, and underwiring
The Ecobalyse declaration platform
All Garment Impact Scores must be calculated using France’s official Ecobalyse platform from the French Ministry of economy and environment to ensure a standard method and transparency. Brands must enter the required data for each product reference. The platform then generates the official score and publishes both the results and signage artwork including the final score.
Clean, well-structured data is essential to avoid errors and ensure regulatory compliance.
Data can be declared:
- Manually in the platform, reference per reference
- Via an imported CSV format file
- Relying on data management expert
